Cat5E cables are copper backbone cables certified to 100 MHz under ISO/IEC 11801 Class D, carrying 1000BASE-T over a 100 metre channel. They remain cost-effective for refurbishment work and for endpoints that never exceed 1 Gbps, such as IP cameras and VoIP handsets. For new horizontal cabling that should leave headroom for 10 Gbps, Cat6 and higher classes are the better choice.
