A data outlet is the user-facing end of structured cabling. The permanent link from the floor distributor is terminated there with a keystone jack, and the user connects a device with a patch cord. The outlet frame is modular: one, two or four ports can share the same frame.
Flush-mount outlets suit permanent installations where cable arrives inside the wall and blend with the architecture. Surface-mount boxes are used where cable arrives in trunking on the surface, in existing buildings and installations that avoid construction work. Shuttered models protect unused ports from dust and physical damage.
The frame standard should match the rest of the installation. French-type systems (45x45 mm and 22.5x45 mm modules) are common in Europe and share frames with power outlets. British-type flush outlets use a different back box size. Models with coloured icons and labelling space make it easier to distinguish data and telephone links.
Industrial environments use IP-rated connection boxes. An IP67 box is dust-tight and withstands temporary immersion, suiting production areas, outdoor connection points and damp environments. Outlet boxes with fiber management serve FTTD (fiber to the desk) installations where fiber termination reaches the work area.
